A reaction time test measures the gap between a signal appearing and your body responding to it. Here the signal is the panel turning green, and the response is your click. What the test records is your simple reaction time: one signal, one response. That is different from choice reaction time, where you have to pick the correct response out of several. Choice response is always slower, because your brain has to decide before it can react.

For a healthy adult, simple visual reaction averages around 200-280 milliseconds, roughly a quarter of a second. People react faster to sound (about 170 ms) than to light, which is why this test stays silent when the panel flips green: a beep would let your ears beat your eyes and quietly inflate your test score. Your result is the mean of five clean clicks, because one click can be a lucky guess or an unlucky blink, while five reveal your real reaction speed.

On a simple visual test, a healthy adult averages about 200-280 ms. Under 210 ms is a fast reaction time, and competitive gamers usually sit in the 180-210 ms range. Anything under 180 ms is exceptional and worth double-checking for an early click.

Why is my reaction time slower than 250 ms?

Sitting a little above 250 ms is completely normal. Your score drops when you are tired, distracted, on a high-latency screen, or not warmed up. Run the test a few times, remove distractions, and use a wired mouse or a high-refresh screen for your best honest number.

Does my equipment affect the test?

Yes. Monitor refresh rate and input lag add real milliseconds between the green flash and your click registering. A 60 Hz laptop can be around 16 ms slower than a 144 Hz gaming monitor before your reflexes come into it, so track your own result over weeks rather than comparing raw numbers across devices.
